Written as a dramatic monologue for a young girl, this speech is 1-2 minutes.
GIFT
INT: AN APARTMENT
Lindsey has just heard her parents fighting about finances. Her father has left and she is trying to comfort her mother.
LINDSEY
Oh, Mama, it's okay. Don't cry. You say it all the time that Daddy yells when he's upset. Well, he's just upset and he'll come back in twenty minutes like he always does and it'll be fine, right Mama?
We can tell him not to worry because I can get a job shoveling sidewalks. And then when it's winter I'll mow lawns and rake leaves. I know I said I would last year but this time I really will. I promise promise promise. Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye.
(Her mother does not seem sufficiently comforted.)
And-oh!-I forgot to tell you that I don't need anything for Christmas from you or Daddy this year. Santa always brings me a really nice gift and that's all I need. I just want everyone to be happy and get along, please, Mama? Mama, please?
